Faith Formation:  the process by which the Gospel transforms my life - thoughts, words, actions

Reflecting on your life, how has your faith been formed?  (Refer to definition above.)

Further prompts to get you thinking:
  • How has God been at work in your life?
  • How does God's love and grace affect you?  As a person?  How does it affect your whole life?
  • How is your life different because of your faith in Christ?
  • How does your faith cause you to think, speak, or act differently on a daily basis?
  • What experiences or moments have been significant in shaping your faith?
    • ...shaping how you understand God?
    • ...shaping how you understand life?
    • ...shaping how you understand or relate to other people?
  • What people in your past have played a significant role in your faith development?

As a baby I was baptized; as a teenager, confirmed and as an adult, married in the Lutheran Church. I have memories as long as I can remember of going to Sunday school and VBS as a kid and teaching Sunday school to the special needs kids as a teenager. My family has always shown me that faith is important by taking me to church and having me involved in the various aspects of learning about what it is to have faith and what it is to be a Christian. I attended regional youth gatherings as a teenager and never looked at being involved in my church or having faith in God as something to be looked down upon, as some people now I think feel that way. I see this slipping away in a way but also recognize in my kids that they love God and have strong faith and I think that has come from a similar structure that I experienced. We look to him to give us peace when we know things are hard or don't understand why something bad happen, but we also know that he is with in good times, all times, really.

I think my life is different because of my faith because while I may try to be a good person, knowing if I mess up or make a bad decision, that God will forgive me and that I am here to forgive others if they do wrong to me. It isn't an easy thing to do, especially when it involves family member that have hurt you or someone else, but my faith gives me hope in people and change can happen if we give it time. My parents, friends and God Parents have all had a strong role in my Christian upbringing. I grew up around most of my cousins and grandparents too so having that tight-nit family that all went to the same church made it a "normal" thing.

Moments that have been significant ins shaping my faith happen all the time; from Sunday school as a child, to taking my marriage vows, knowing that there are three of us in this marriage and not just two. The birth of my kids, he was there, witnessing those beautiful miracles.

I don't consider myself an "in your face" type of Christian, meaning I don't talk about my faith much unless I am around other Christians. I work with several people that are either atheists or were raised in a church but no longer active in a faith. So, I tend to hide that side of me when others around me may not be as understanding about why I am one. I know I shouldn't be scared or afraid to be who I am but have found it to be easier to avoid those conversations in the work place. Not to say I don't have some friends at work that I can truly be myself with, I can; but I trust them and know that they won't think anything of it for me to be anyone but myself, and that includes sharing my faith.
